Single Layer Coating Design

Single Layer Coating Design

The optical coating can be directly applied to the surface of the optical element, and the reflectance and refractive index of the optical element can be adjusted. Optical coatings are commonly used in highly reflective dielectric mirrors, broadband beam splitters and filters. The simplest case is in the case of normal incidence, the designed anti-reflection film coating uses a material whose refractive index is close to the geometric mean of the refractive index of two adjacent media, and the optical thickness is a quarter wavelength. At this time, the reflected waves at the two interfaces are equal in size, and interference occurs and cancels each other out. There are two limiting factors in this method: one is that a material with a suitable refractive index cannot be found; the other is that a single-layer coating can only work in a very limited broadband situation. The thickness of each layer constituting the optical coating is usually tens of nanometers to hundreds of nanometers, and a single optical coating may be composed of hundreds of layers. High precision is required for deposition techniques, including thermal evaporation, electron beam, ion-assisted deposition and advanced plasma deposition. The most suitable coating technology for the intended product design depends on the operating environment, spectral requirements, physical characteristics, application requirements and economic goals. The optical coating process is completed through comprehensive performance testing using precision metrology tools.

The service advantages of single layer coating design

Traditional design method, efficient production

Simple types of anti-reflective coatings with a small number of layers are usually designed using analytical methods. In complex designs, a numerical optimization algorithm is required, which is similar to the method used in dielectric mirrors.
